A Slice of Paradise

This is a special one. I've been here many times before starting this blog and every time I go I always leave wishing I was able to spend more time in this slice of paradise. My great grandfather built a lake house up in the Rideau Lakes Region of Ontario over 100 years ago and it still stands today. It’s been a staple of our family since I was born, the yearly trips are a much needed reset nowadays. It’s a place of peace and endless memories simultaneously. This year I spent a lot of time on the still water alone on a stand-up paddle board and that complete disconnection is something that we don’t experience much in daily life anymore. It's a throwback to a previous way of life that goes under appreciated. Most people, including myself, do not get enough of the sounds of nature, fresh air, natural bodies of water, and wildlife. It sets your mind at ease in a way that’s hard to put a finger on. I didn't miss the hustle and bustle one bit.

The other large part of the trip was of course spent with family and the open conversation that comes through the natural “boredom” of disconnection from our daily notifications is amazing. It was strange being up there for the 250th fourth of July but at the same time I’ve only spent one in America in my 32 years. It’s a tradition that may be sac-American but it’s been our vacation week forever. We grilled burgers and dogs on an ancient mason-built stone grill. Not much that's more American than that. The golden hours and sunsets over a few drinks never get old.

We went through the locks, played games at night, took in some world cup and generally chilled. Got some work done too, a storm had come through the property that knocked down a bunch of trees, limbs, other debris and took the power out for a couple days before we got there as well. Using a hand saw and circular saw to piece up a decent size tree limb will really bring you back to the roots. I honestly miss that type of physical labor it's good for the soul.
